TANSTAAFL-I first ran into this word/acronym in Robert Heinlein's The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. There Ain't no Such Thing As A Free Lunch. We all know that the cost on anything advertised as "free" is built into the price of the goods or service. I don't charge my clients when they have questions about tax planning or get a letter or need to do an estimate. I have built it into my basic price (and I would rather do preventative then to deal with the mess later.)
The problem with the Internet is the the costs are so low that it seems like a free lunch. Unfortunately, the backlash is actually making it harder for the general public and marketers using the Web responsibly. To counter the volume of spam, we have to set up firewalls and other programs to keep our e-mail load manageable. That means that sometimes messages we want get rejected.
Of course, blogs have fallen victim to the same problem with comment spam. My policy is to publish all comments but if it is spam or offensive I will delete it. I want to hear from people who not only agree but disagree with me. If there are sites you want to share please include a URL. But I reserve the right to edit or delete the comment if I feel the need to. Freedom of Speech? You have it so get your own blog. Our Taxing Times is my platform and as long as it is used to discuss issues I welcome comments but I will not let it be used to market products and services that I would not recommend or enhance the discussion of issues being legitimately discussed. TANSTAAFL so start paying for your own marketing.
