If you current owe back Kansas taxes, income, business, sales, any kind of Kansas tax, you can take part in the latest tax amnesty program and save yourself money. So look at your finances and see if you can pay off a tax bill, just the tax before any interest and penalties have been added. If you have several bills (like owing on more than one year or different kinds of taxes), you can just pay off one or all. The key is that you must pay off the tax in full but you won't have to pay any interest and penalties that have accrued on the balance due. That can be a big savings.
Starting September 1st, the application form will be available on the Kansas Department of revenue website. It will be in the "What's New" section. You then have until October 15th to get the completed form and check to the state (must be post marked by 10/15.)
You have to pay the actual tax off in full but you choose the tax/year(s) if there are more than one year owing. If you do owe for more than one year or type of tax, take some time to look at your most recent notices. See which taxes (not interest and penalties) you could completely pay off by the deadline. Your choice may be limited by the funds you have and you can only pay off one year/tax. Pay off the oldest year you can or the one with the highest penalties and interest. Use this opportunity to save yourself the most money possible. On a debt over 5 years old, half of the balance due could be penalties and interest.
Currently, Kansas is owed $127 million in back taxes and officials hope to raise $8 million of that with this project.
